FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

This film was very personal for me as it connected me to my Yup’ik heritage. I learned a lot about interviewing, editing, and the importance of practicing filming in unfamiliar settings. My hope is that my film will break through stereotypes and get people excited about learning more about the Yup’ik culture, music, stories, and traditions.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

Definitely filming the concert! I had never filmed a live concert and it was challenging because of the stage lighting and set up. It also took me out of my comfort zone and I learned a lot as a filmmaker.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

The opportunity is important to students because it gives them a chance to be creative, learn new skills and have fun.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

I would say some of the obstacles were filming in less than ideal conditions and not having the appropriate equipment like an iPhone Gimbal stabilizer . Also scouting the location and making the most of the allotted time I had with the musical group so that I could tell a compelling story was challenging.

What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?

Doing a project like this is hard and it tests your resolve but stick with it. You will learn about yourself as a filmmaker and feel a sense of accomplishment seeing the project through so don’t give up and be flexible. And persevere.
