From Cranes to Fame
LOGLINE
Chester the Crane Boy spends all his time folding paper cranes. But is that all he can do? What happens when some football players start messing with Chester’s cranes?
FILMMAKER INTERVIEW
What do you want the audience to take away from the film?
Look for ways to connect with others instead of seeing others as different. Don’t ever think you know someone, even yourself. Everyone has many layers and many talents and unlimited potential.
Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?
The scene where the football players throw the football at the crate of cranes was our favorite. It took so many tries! We shattered the first chair the crate was sitting on and then we kept missing the crate and hitting everything and body else! When Matthew finally nailed the crate of cranes, we all wanted to celebrate, but instead we had to keep in character. Also, through the ball with the high school senior who came over to act as Seb’s older self was a bunch of fun. Who wouldn’t want to throw a football instead of doing work at school?
Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?
This gave us a chance to do what we love! A lot of us in the class really hate doing schoolwork and skip a lot of days to go skiing or anything except come to school. We actually wanted to come to school on the days we worked on the film!
What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?
We had a hard time getting a high school football player to film with us. Also, the high school wouldn’t let us on their field to film, and it took a long time to walk to Eco Park, so we ended up filming at our school. Since the football players from the high school kept backing out, we ended up using a soccer/tennis player. We kind of learned not to judge others, because just like Crane Boy in the film, the soccer/tennis player actually had an incredible arm! He told us he could throw the ball easy 50-60 yards and we said “sure” —-and then he did! We couldn’t even catch it at first! Too bad he didn’t play football for Taos!
What advice would you give to future participants in Film Prize Junior?
Make sure you check your footage right after you shoot it, in case you need to do a re-take. It is really hard to shoot the scene again, if days later you discover you had a hand in the shot or it wasn’t taken from the right spot. Also, try to avoid shooting anywhere near a school yard, because the noise from the kids outside always gets into the film.
