FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

I want the audience to see that if you need help you should reach out and get the help you need, emotions can be scary and may seem like a monster at times. These emotions can take over if you don’t deal with it. It’s important to remember that you have people that care about you, even though it may feel like you don’t; Ryder wasn’t able to overcome the monster that mental health creates, but you can!

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

I liked filming the ending scene because putting fake blood on the actor was really fun. I also really enjoyed filming the scene where Ryder gets dragged by the monster. It was funny and very intense. The monster and actor said they enjoyed that scene the most as well.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

Opportunities like Film Prize Junior are important to me because it gives me and the rest of my group a chance to express our creativity in any way we want through film. It’s also really fun to film and I always seem to learn something new each time. I also get to know people more when I film. Sometimes we need actors from outside the people we are familiar with. This creates opportunities to talk to new people.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

The biggest obstacle we faced was not having enough people while filming. Most of the film was created by only three people, two of which were actors. In the future I think it would be better to have at least five helpers. We had to hire trees to be mike people. They were surprisingly helpful though! Also, Joziah, the editor, was challenged while editing. The monster was originally green but he had to put a lot of hard work in to make the monster black. Editing the clips in general was also a difficult task. We learned that we can use more hands while filming and finishing editing sooner so we’re less stressed by the end. We also learned how to work well together under stressed conditions.
