What do you want the audience to take away from the film?

The importance of acknowledging our mental health challenges, and finding ways to talk openly and honestly about our experiences.

Which scene did you have an absolute blast filming and why?

The initial sound check videos with my “talent”, Justis. He was NOT cooperating which made for several great Blooper Reels! Somehow even with the heavy topic, we enjoyed moments of humor while filming.

Why are opportunities like Film Prize Junior important to students like you?

As a marginalized Black Girl raised in New Mexico, my contributions, voice, and presence are often quickly overlooked or omitted altogether. Even as an Elite Athlete, I still find myself being misunderstood and required to advocate for my right to be acknowledged for ALL the strengths and talents I possess. Creating films that hold space and shine a light on complex subject matters like racial equity, gender equality, and mental health, provides an accessible, creative medium for advocacy and education.

What obstacles challenged you and your crew the most when completing this film? What did you learn from making this short film?

FPJRNM deadlines always occur at the same time my track season begins. This year, college visits and other commitments have presented a bigger challenge for me. I learned a lot about how to support other student filmmakers via the Director’s Cut Film Club I started at Los Alamos High School this year. I also enjoyed working with my “talent” and being more familiar with the process of getting my film completed.
